LS 3 strikes power line at meadow edge on outlanding

Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem, Czech Republic Rolladen-Schneider LS3

On a competition outlanding near Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem, the pilot of an LS 3 was lightly injured and the glider substantially damaged when it hit a power line after gliding past landable fields. Heading home to Frýdlant through rain showers, the pilot considered meadows at Čeladná, further along the valley, for a landing. South of Kunčice, below about 130 m AGL, he glided on over wooded, built-up ground. Back in a shower, he turned right at about 39 m AGL towards a meadow; at about 7–8 m AGL the glider caught the wires along its edge, probably with the undercarriage, and the right wing hit a concrete pole.

  1. Competition task, day 2: The pilot was aerotowed from Frýdlant nad Ostravicí at 11:15 for a speed task via Slavičín, Bystřička dam and Kroměříž, and set off on task at 11:59.
  2. Rain showers on the last leg: From 15:28 the pilot glided towards the finish for about 15 minutes. By his account showers were forming between Hostýn and Frýdlant; he flew through a gap in them over Javorník.
  3. Fields near Kunčice not used: At about 15:42, below about 130 m AGL south of Kunčice, the pilot did not use the landable fields there and glided on along the valley towards meadows at Čeladná.
  4. Low over trees and houses: The glider continued over wooded, built-up ground near the Kunčice railway halt and was about 39 m AGL over woodland at 15:43.
  5. Right turn towards a meadow: Flying into another shower, the pilot turned right towards a meadow and probably crossed the trees at about 10 m AGL. Power lines on poles ran along the meadow's edge.
  6. Wires and pole struck: At about 7–8 m AGL and about 84 km/h the glider caught the wires, probably with the undercarriage, and the right wing hit a concrete pole. The pilot was lightly injured.
