LS 8-a strikes house during outlanding after searching low for lift

During an outlanding attempt, the pilot of a Rolladen-Schneider LS 8-a was seriously injured; the glider was substantially damaged. On a competition task, the glider was launched by aerotow for a roughly 300 km triangle. After about 2 h 10 min it was below 200 m AGL, searching for lift near Eichigt. At low height the pilot turned toward a field to land out but could not clear the village edge, and the glider struck the roof of a house — the nose bored through the wooden structure with about 100 litres of water ballast still on board. No technical defect was found.

1. Competition task: Launched by aerotow for a ~300 km triangle on a competition day.
2. Searching low for lift: After ~2 h 10 min the glider was below 200 m AGL, searching for lift near Eichigt.
3. Turned to land out: At low height the pilot turned toward a field to land out.
4. Could not clear the village: The glider could not clear the built-up edge of the village.
5. Struck a house roof: The nose bored through the wooden roof of a house with ~100 L water ballast aboard; pilot seriously injured, glider substantially damaged.
