Astir CS catches the right wing in long grass after a wing drop in the flare

Innsbruck, Austria Grob Astir CS

The pilot of an Astir CS was seriously injured when it struck the ground nose-first on landing. It was his fifth practice flight of the day and his second in the type, on which he had ten minutes; his total experience was under 18 hours. In the hold-off on the glider strip the left wing dropped. He corrected with right aileron and the right wing touched the grass, which the report says very probably helped. The glider slewed round and, with speed still high, went half-inverted and hit almost vertically on the nose.

  1. Fifth practice flight of the day: Three dual flights in an ASK 21 were followed by a first solo in the Astir CS. All four were uneventful.
  2. Second flight on the type: The accident flight was his second in the Astir CS, on which he had about ten minutes. His total experience was 17 hours 28 minutes.
  3. Left wing drops in the hold-off: Landing on the glider strip, the glider was in the hold-off when the left wing went down.
  4. Correction with right aileron: The pilot moved the aileron to the right to pick the wing up.
  5. Right wing reaches the grass: The right wing then touched the ground. The long grass on the strip is described as very probably having helped that happen.
  6. Half-inverted, nose-first impact: The glider slewed round and, with the speed still high, rolled half-inverted and struck almost vertically on the nose. The forward fuselage and the canopy broke up.
