A320 IFR vs aerotow: Class E airprox

Lübeck-Blankensee, Germany Airbus A320

Class E airprox ~2.8 km south of Lübeck-Blankensee between an IFR A320 on radar vectors for ILS RWY 07 and a VFR aerotow (Grob 109 tug with ASW 27 in tow); no injuries, ASW 27 lightly damaged. Radar showed closest separation ~37 m horizontal, ~120 m vertical. The A320 continued descent below 915 m MSL into the developing conflict; a TCAS 'Climb' RA reversed it to a climb. During the avoidance the ASW 27 contacted the leading tug's tow rope and shed its left winglet. Contributing: late, insufficient ATC heading correction (10°); descent clearance not withdrawn; radar vectoring south of CTR without adequate platform coordination.

  1. A320 on radar vectors, ILS RWY 07: An IFR Airbus A320 inbound from Gdansk to Lübeck-Blankensee was on radar vectors for an ILS approach to RWY 07, descending in Class E airspace under Bremen approach control. After requesting RWY 25 (rejected by Lübeck platform), the approach was changed to RWY 07.
  2. Aerotow departed glider site, heading S: A VFR aerotow combination consisting of a Grob 109 B tug and a Schleicher ASW 27-18 E in tow departed the glider site at Lübeck-Blankensee airport. The tow climbed and tracked southbound; the ASW 27's radio was tuned to the gliding-site frequency and could not be reached by ATC.
  3. A320 descent clearance not withdrawn: The approach controller had cleared the A320 to descend to ~915 m MSL despite the developing conflict with the aerotow visible on radar to the south of the CTR. The descent clearance was not withdrawn as the conflict developed.
  4. Late, insufficient ATC heading turn 10°: A heading correction of 10° was issued to the A320 at 16:49:56, but this was issued late and was insufficient to produce adequate lateral separation. The aerotow combination then turned right, briefly back toward the A320's flight path.
  5. TCAS RA 'Climb' on A320 at ~925 m MSL: At about 925 m MSL the A320 TCAS issued a Resolution Advisory 'Climb'. Two seconds later the A320 transitioned from descent to climb. Radar showed closest separation of ~37 m horizontal and ~120 m vertical. During the avoidance the ASW 27 contacted the tow rope of the leading Grob 109 and the left winglet was torn off.
  6. ASW 27 lightly damaged; no injuries: The A320 climbed to ~1 030 m MSL during the RA; the conflict was resolved seventeen seconds after RA initiation. The aerotow landed safely. The ASW 27 was lightly damaged (left winglet torn off); the A320 was undamaged. No injuries to any occupant.
