Ventus C drops a wing on the ground run of an outlanding in stubble

On the ground run of a competition outlanding near Vlastislav a Ventus C caught its right wingtip on rising stubble; the pilot was unhurt, but the glider swung round and broke its tail boom. Three and a half hours in, the sky ahead had closed in and the wind freshened, and after a few minutes working a sunlit windward slope at 250 to 300 m AGL the pilot committed to a mown wheat field he had picked out while circling. The approach and touchdown were normal. About 50 m into the run the right wingtip met slightly rising ground; the glider swung about 120° and stopped 20 m further on.

1. Competition task from Raná: The pilot aerotowed from Raná for a 339.5 km racing task with three turn points, climbing in thermals along the way.
2. Sky closes in on the third leg: On the third leg near Litoměřice the sky became almost overcast and a fresh westerly set in, and the thermals faded after about three and a half hours airborne.
3. Slope working fails at 250 to 300 m: North of the declared track the pilot worked a sunlit windward slope near Vlastislav for several minutes at 250 to 300 m AGL, but found no lift as the wind strengthened.
4. Commits to a field picked while circling: He committed to low stubble on a freshly mown wheat field he had picked out while circling, flying a left base leg into wind at 110 to 120 km/h with the brakes out and clearing a road.
5. Right wing touches rising ground: Touchdown was normal. About 50 m into the ground run the right wingtip met slightly rising ground, probably as the 17.6 m wing flexed over the uneven field.
6. Swings 120°, tail boom breaks: The glider swung about 120° and stopped 20 m further on. The rear fuselage cracked and broke about 30 cm ahead of the fin. The pilot was unhurt and got out unaided.
