L-13A Blaník hits a sign post and road embankment after a long tailwind outlanding
On an outlanding near Mýto during a soaring-camp flight from Hořovice, the pilot of an L-13A Blaník was uninjured when the glider, landing long with a slight tailwind, rolled across a service road and struck a road-sign post and a road embankment; it was substantially damaged. Returning from 2,200 m MSL in weaker thermals, the pilot chose a 600 × 600 m meadow and began a right inspection turn at about 200 m AGL, but broke it off after about 180° at 100 m AGL and landed along the service road with the wind behind. The glider touched down about 150 m before the end of the field and was not braked to a stop.
- Soaring-camp thermal flight: The pilot was aerotowed from Hořovice at 14:32 for a local thermal flight during a two-week soaring camp, and flew west as far as Letkov.
- Return in weaker thermals: At 2,200 m MSL the pilot turned back toward Hořovice. Finding no further climbs and losing the height for a glide home, the pilot decided to land out.
- Meadow chosen, inspection turn: The pilot chose a 600 × 600 m meadow of low grass between Mýto and Kařez and began a right inspection turn at about 200 m AGL.
- Turn cut short, tailwind landing: After about 180° the pilot broke off the turn at 100 m AGL and landed along a service road with a slight tailwind, without correcting the approach for it.
- Long touchdown, roll not stopped: The glider touched down about 150 m before the end of the field, further than the pilot expected, and was not braked to a stop; it rolled on, slightly right of its landing line.
- Sign post and road embankment: The glider crossed the service road; its left wing struck the steel post of a road sign and its nose struck a road embankment. The pilot was unhurt.
