JS1-C lands hard on an outlanding flown slow with the flaps set negative
On a competition final glide to Zbraslavice, the pilot of a Jonker JS1-C flew on with no height reserve before landing out near Šlechtín; the glider was substantially damaged. Some 5.5 km out it was already below 100 m AGL over rising ground, with few landable fields ahead. The pilot glided on to the finish circle, reached it at about 50 m AGL and turned about 140° towards a field with about 250 m ahead. The landing was flown slow with the flaps set negative, and a last-moment 45° swerve made it downwind. The glider dropped in, bounced, caught its right wing and slid sideways.
- Competition final glide: The pilot was aerotowed from Zbraslavice for a 253 km competition task in the 18 m class and set off on the final glide from about 1,270 m AGL.
- Glide continued below 100 m AGL: About 5.5 km out the glider was below 100 m AGL over rising ground; the pilot glided on and reached the finish circle at about 50 m AGL, with few landable fields ahead.
- Turn to a field at ~50 m AGL: The pilot turned right about 140° towards a gently sloping field with low vegetation north of Šlechtín, with about 250 m of it ahead.
- Low speed, flaps at −5°: The pilot flew the landing manoeuvre at low speed with the flaps in position 1 (−5°), which the report found to be the wrong setting for landing.
- Last-moment swerve, downwind: At the last moment the pilot changed the plan and swerved about 45° right, so the landing was made downwind in a wind of about 12 km/h.
- Drop, bounce, right wing catches: The glider dropped into soft vegetation, by the recorder from about 30 m AGL, bounced, caught its right wing and swung 90° right, sliding sideways.
- Glider substantially damaged: The left wing struck hard, stony ground and lost its winglet; the forward fuselage cracked and the left leading edge broke near the root.
