Nimbus 2 damages its tail as the pilot puts a wing down in a cross-slope outlanding

Vrbno pod Pradědem, Czech Republic Schempp-Hirth Nimbus 2

After a wave flight from Krnov, the pilot of a Nimbus 2 was unhurt but the glider was substantially damaged in an outlanding across a meadow sloping about 10° near Vrbno pod Pradědem. At the end of the ground run the glider threatened to swing downhill; he put the left wing down to prevent it, the wing bounced and the glider swung round 180°. Finding no wave, he had turned back; the cloud below had closed, so he descended through it on instruments without an instrument qualification and came out 300–400 m AGL, unable to glide to Krnov or a better field. From the air the meadow had looked less steep than it was.

  1. Aerotow for a wave flight: The pilot was aerotowed from Krnov at 08:58 for a wave flight and released above cloud at 2114 m MSL near the Hrubý Jeseník ridge.
  2. No wave contact; turn for home: He glided along the ridge for about four minutes, then about 4 km north-east into the expected second wave, without contacting the wave. He turned back for Krnov at 1522 m MSL, 29 km out.
  3. Descent through cloud: Returning by another route through the second rotor, he found the cloud layer below closed and descended through it on instruments, though not qualified for instrument flight.
  4. Meadow chosen below cloud: He came out at 300–400 m AGL about 5 km north of Vrbno pod Pradědem, unable to glide to Krnov or a better field, and chose a meadow by the road to Vrbno.
  5. Landing across a 10° slope: From the air the slope had looked gentler. He landed across a slope averaging about 10°, and at the end of the ground run the glider threatened to swing downhill.
  6. Wing put down; glider swings 180°: To keep it from swinging downhill he put the left wing on the ground; it bounced off the terrain and the glider swung round about 180°.
  7. Tail cracked; pilot unhurt: The pilot was unhurt. The tail fuselage cracked at the fin junction and the all-moving tailplane was wrenched to the right.
