ASW 19 B and a faster-climbing ASW 19 collide in a shared thermal
On a competition task near Jablonná, an ASW 19 B and a faster-climbing ASW 19 collided in a shared thermal; the ASW 19 B pilot bailed out with light injuries and his glider was destroyed. Circling left at about 1,300 m AGL, the ASW 19 rose above the ASW 19 B, which probably crossed beneath it; neither pilot recognised the conflict in time. The ASW 19 pilot saw it pass close below and tried to turn right and climb, but his left wing hit the ASW 19 B's tailplane. The ASW 19 B pitched onto its back, its elevator unresponsive; its pilot parachuted clear and the glider spun into a forest.
- Circling on a competition task: On the second day of a club-class competition from Zbraslavice, the ASW 19 B pilot was circling left with several other gliders in a thermal near Jablonná.
- Faster climber closing from below: The ASW 19 joined the thermal at about 13:43 and climbed at 2.9 m/s against the ASW 19 B's 0.8 m/s, probably overtaking it on the inside of the left turn.
- Crossing paths not recognised: Within about two seconds the ASW 19 rose above the ASW 19 B, which probably crossed beneath it; neither pilot recognised that their paths would cross, and both kept circling.
- Avoiding turn just before impact: The ASW 19 pilot saw the other glider pass close below him in a left bank and tried to turn right and climb; the manoeuvre only lessened the impact.
- Wing strikes the tailplane: At about 1,300 m AGL the ASW 19's left wing hit the underside of the ASW 19 B's tailplane; the ASW 19 B pitched over onto its back and its elevator no longer responded.
- ASW 19 B pilot bails out: He jettisoned the canopy, released his harness and fell clear; the parachute opened automatically and he steered it to a meadow beside the forest, lightly injured on landing.
- ASW 19 B destroyed; ASW 19 lands: The ASW 19 B spun into a forest clearing and was destroyed; the ASW 19, its left aileron slightly damaged, flew on and landed at Zbraslavice.
