SGS 2-33A ground-loops after a gust displaces it into an angled touchdown

Two occupants were unhurt but their SGS 2-33A was substantially damaged when it ground-looped while landing at Sanford, after a gust displaced the glider to the left over the grass runway. Too low to manoeuvre around a parked glider and regain a normal landing path, the pilot put the glider down at an angle to the runway; it swung round on the landing roll, and the fuselage and wings took the damage. The wind was from 260 degrees at 22 km/h gusting 31, within about ten degrees of the runway heading.

1. Landing on the grass runway: The glider was landing on the grass runway 25 at Sanford, with the wind from 260 degrees at 22 km/h gusting 31, close to the runway heading.
2. A gust displaces the glider left: During the landing a gust displaced the glider laterally to the left of its intended path.
3. A parked glider blocks the line: The glider was by then too low to manoeuvre around a parked glider and regain a normal landing path.
4. Touchdown at an angle: The pilot put the glider down at an angle to the runway rather than aligned with it.
5. Ground loop on the landing roll: The glider swung round on the landing roll. The fuselage and wings were substantially damaged; both occupants were unhurt.
