SGS 1-26 runs off the runway into terrain after landing long

The pilot of an SGS 1-26 was uninjured, but the glider was substantially damaged, when it ran off the end of the runway into terrain after landing long near Hampshire. On approach to RWY 27, the pilot encountered unexpected lift and used a side slip to lose height, but descended too low to continue; he switched to landing in the opposite direction on the same runway, touching down about two-thirds of the way along it. With too little runway remaining to stop, the glider ran off the departure end and struck terrain; the left wing was substantially damaged.

1. Approach to RWY 27: On approach to RWY 27, the pilot encountered unexpected lift.
2. Side slip to lose height: The pilot used a side slip to descend, but ended up too low to continue the approach.
3. Switches to landing the opposite way: The pilot switched to landing in the opposite direction on the same runway.
4. Touches down two-thirds along: The glider touched down about two-thirds of the way along the runway.
5. Not enough runway left to stop: With too little runway remaining, the glider could not stop before the departure end.
6. Runway excursion into terrain: The glider ran off the departure end and struck terrain; the pilot was uninjured, the left wing substantially damaged.
