ASW 20 L comes down in forest below high ground; cause undetermined
On a soaring flight near Feldkirchen, a pilot was seriously injured and the ASW 20 L destroyed in a fall into forest below the Nikolaihöhe. He had been towed off Feldkirchen at 10:26 and released at about 1,300 m MSL over the Ossiacher Tauern. At about 10:51 he overflew the Nikolaihöhe; the glider then came down into forest some 200 m lower, touched several trees and came to rest in a gully of about 40 degrees. He was trapped in the cockpit and hoisted out; conscious at the site, he could give no account of what had happened. Elevator control continuity was established, and no cause was found.
- Thermal flight from Feldkirchen: The pilot was towed off Feldkirchen at 10:26 behind a Dimona motorglider and released at about 1,300 m MSL over the Ossiacher Tauern at 10:30.
- Descent into forest below high ground: At about 10:51 the pilot overflew the Nikolaihöhe. The glider then came down into the forest some 200 m below it; what happened in between was never established.
- Trees, then the ground: The glider touched several trees, struck the ground and came to rest in a gully of about 40 degrees.
- Trapped in the cockpit: The glider was destroyed and the pilot seriously injured. Trapped in the cockpit, he was freed, hoisted out by cable and flown to hospital.
