K 8B undershoots the airfield after opening the airbrakes early

Spitzerberg, Austria Alexander Schleicher K 8B

A student was unhurt, but the K 8B was substantially damaged when he undershot the airfield on his eighth solo on the type. He had 59 minutes on the K 8B and under six hours in total, most of his training flown on a two-seater. On the approach, with the airbrakes already out, he saw a parked aircraft on the strip he was aiming for and extended his base leg to reach further north. His instructor, watching from the tower, told him by radio to close the brakes. He did, but the glider touched down outside the airfield and the right wing struck a bush.

  1. Eighth solo on the K 8B: The student set out on his eighth solo flight on the type.
  2. Winch launch and normal circuit: He launched by winch from runway 33 under an instructor watching from the tower. The launch and circuit were unremarkable.
  3. Airbrakes out on the approach: He deployed the airbrakes on the landing approach, which sharply reduced the glide the glider could still achieve.
  4. Parked aircraft on the intended strip: He then saw an aircraft parked on the glider strip he had planned to land on, about 170 m north of the powered runway centreline.
  5. Base leg extended to reach north: He extended the base leg to get further north. The instructor saw the final going low and told him by radio to close the brakes, which he did.
  6. Touchdown short of the airfield: The glider came down outside the airfield boundary and the right wing struck a bush about 230 m from the runway 33 threshold.
