- Approach to airfield: During the approach phase to a military airfield in the Alps, the glider was returning toward the start point after soaring flight.
- Lack of lift: A lack of updrafts made it difficult for the pilot to maintain sufficient altitude to return comfortably to the start airfield.
- Marginal return altitude: Because of the missing lift, the glider was at a marginal height for the return, leaving little safety margin over terrain and obstacles.
- Tight obstacle approach: The pilot continued the approach to the airfield with a very tight clearance over obstacles instead of diverting or choosing a less constrained path.
- Contact with trees: On the low and obstacle-limited final approach, the glider descended into a group of trees and struck them.
- Crash - no injury: The glider was damaged after colliding with the trees, but there were no injuries to the pilot.
