Mid-air collision at Birrfeld involving K 8 B and Chipmunk during approach

Birrfeld Flugplatz (LSZF), Switzerland Alexander Schleicher K 8 B De Havilland DHC-1 MK.22

On May 24, 1969, a mid-air collision occurred at Birrfeld Airfield involving a Schleicher K 8 B glider and a De Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk. The Chipmunk's tow rope struck the left wing of the K 8 B during approach, causing a portion of the wing to detach. Despite the damage, the K 8 B pilot managed to land safely near the airfield, and the Chipmunk completed a normal landing after releasing the tow rope. The incident was attributed to both pilots being distracted by another glider circling in the approach area. No injuries were reported.
