Perte de puissance du Grob G109 au décollage à Moreton-in-Marsh entraîne un impact dans un fossé

Le 6 avril 1986, un planeur motorisé auto-lanceur Grob G109 a subi une perte de puissance lors du décollage à Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. L'appareil était en vol d'entraînement et avait atterri plus tôt en raison d'une tempête. Lorsqu'il a tenté de décoller de la piste en herbe mouillée, la puissance du moteur a soudainement diminué, provoquant l'affaissement du planeur sur la piste. Le pilote a tenté de franchir un fossé à la fin de la piste, mais l'aile droite s'est abaissée, entraînant l'effondrement du train d'atterrissage à l'impact. Les deux occupants sont indemnes, mais l'appareil a subi des dommages importants. La cause de la perte de puissance n'a pas été déterminée, bien qu'un givrage du carburateur ait été suspecté.

1. Self-launch takeoff roll: During a self-launch takeoff from the 500-yard wet grass strip, the Grob G109 accelerated normally and became airborne at about 45 kt, well before the predetermined abandon point.
2. Sudden power loss: While the aircraft was held level to build speed to the 52 kt climb-out value, the engine speed suddenly reduced, causing a significant loss of power.
3. Attempt to clear ditch: With insufficient runway remaining to stop and seeing a wide ditch at the end of the strip, the pilot attempted to fly across it using the limited remaining engine power.
4. Wing drop and impact: As the aircraft just became airborne again, the right wing began to drop and the right undercarriage struck the far side of the ditch, collapsing the fixed gear.
5. Crash - no injury: The aircraft sank to the ground, slewed to the right, and came to rest in the field with substantial structural damage but no injuries to the two occupants.
