Décrochage fatal du LS 4 lors d'un atterrissage en campagne près d'Oberdigisheim

Le 25 avril 2004, un accident mortel impliquant un Rolladen-Schneider LS 4 s'est produit près d'Oberdigisheim, en Allemagne. Le pilote, qui avait environ 216 heures d'expérience de vol, a tenté un atterrissage en campagne après près d'une heure de vol. Des témoins ont observé le planeur décrocher et entrer en vrille à basse altitude, entraînant un impact presque vertical. Le pilote a été mortellement blessé et le planeur a été détruit. Le rapport a confirmé que le décrochage s'est produit en raison d'une vitesse insuffisante lors de l'approche d'atterrissage.

1. Cross-country flight: The LS 4 launched by aerotow from Kirchheim/Teck-Hahnweide for a cross-country soaring flight and proceeded uneventfully for nearly an hour.
2. Lee-side approach path: During preparation for an outlanding near Oberdigisheim, the glider’s approach path ran behind a westward-sloping hillside, placing it in pronounced lee with expected wind shear and increased sink.
3. Low-speed approach: While setting up the approach to the selected outlanding field, the glider was flown with insufficient airspeed for the conditions.
4. Stall in low turn: At about 50 m above ground in a turn toward the outlanding field, the glider exceeded its critical angle of attack, stalled, and entered a spin.
5. Spin unrecoverable: Because of the very low altitude, there was not enough height available to successfully recover from the spin before ground impact.
6. Crash - fatal: The glider impacted the ground in a steep, nearly vertical attitude on a westward-sloping hillside near Oberdigisheim, fatally injuring the pilot and destroying the aircraft.
