DG-202 wheel brake fails on landing rollout; collision with hangar
After cutting short a local familiarization flight from Münster/VS (LSPU) due to deteriorating weather, the pilot landed a DG-202 on rwy 23 at ~100 km/h. The glider touched down past the midpoint, leaving ~350 m for rollout. Near the end the pilot turned right off centerline onto the grass strip and tried to brake — the drum brake produced no effect despite full handle travel. The glider rolled across the grass, crossed a public road, and struck a hangar corner, a sign, and two barrier posts. The drum brake's Bowden cable was loose (sole cause). Substantial damage to leading edges, left wing root, and nose. Pilot uninjured.
- Local landing after early return: After a local familiarization flight from Münster/VS (LSPU) in the Obergoms region (max ~2300 m AMSL), the pilot returned early due to deteriorating weather from the west. Landed on the slightly downhill rwy 23 (NE→SW).
- Loose brake Bowden cable: The actuating Bowden cable for the drum wheel brake was loose / not correctly tensioned — the brake could not be operated. SUST identified this as the sole cause of brake failure; no systemic factor. Brake function is pre-flight checkable: lifting the wheel cover reveals cable tension, and full brake-handle travel should produce wheel resistance during taxi.
- Late touchdown: Final approach at 100 km/h (+10 km/h over still-air best-glide approach speed) for expected headwind and light turbulence. Touchdown was past the runway midpoint, leaving ~350 m for the rollout.
- Brake fails on rollout: Near the end of the runway, the pilot turned right off the centerline onto the grass strip to roll toward the apron, and tried to brake. The drum brake produced no effect despite full brake-handle travel.
- Crosses road, hits objects: Without effective braking, the glider rolled across the grass strip, crossed a public side road, and struck the corner of a hangar, a signal board, and two barrier posts before coming to rest.
- Collision damage; no injury: Pilot uninjured. Severe damage to both wing leading edges, left wing root, and fuselage tip. Investigation closed by summary report under VSZV Art. 46; no systemic factor.
