ASW 24 stalls turning into pattern after failed climb-out

Weipertshofen, Germany Alexander Schleicher ASW 24

While entering the pattern turn at Weipertshofen, the pilot of an ASW 24 was fatally injured. After aerotow the glider released about 400 m above the airfield. One full circle produced no climb and the glider lost height continuously while routing back toward the north circuit. At about 100 m AGL, entering the pattern turn, the minimum speed for the bank angle was not maintained; the glider stalled and departed controlled flight. With no altitude to recover, it struck a meadow 770 m north of the airfield. No technical defects were found; weather was suitable.

  1. Aerotow launch: Aerotow from RWY 29 at 13:09; released at about 400 m above the airfield.
  2. No climb after release: Only one full circle was flown after release; the glider lost height continuously while routing toward the north circuit.
  3. Low-speed pattern-turn entry: Turning into the circuit at about 100 m above the ground, the minimum speed for the chosen bank angle was not maintained.
  4. Aerodynamic stall: The glider departed controlled flight in the turn.
  5. Insufficient recovery altitude: Height above ground was too low to regain a normal flight attitude.
  6. Ground impact — pilot fatal: Impact on a meadow about 770 m north of the airfield; aircraft destroyed, pilot fatally injured.
